HVAC Tips for New Homeowners

If you’re new to homeownership, you probably know that it’s an exciting and daunting time. You’ve got a house, congrats! And now, you’re the landlord and it’s time to start looking into things in your house, including your HVAC system. Figuring out how to get the most out of your HVAC system can feel daunting, but don’t worry, we’ve got some handy HVAC tips for you!

Tip #1: Keep up with Routine Maintenance

It’s a good idea to schedule semi-annual service with a qualified HVAC service company, like ourselves here at Manuel and Sons. Regularly scheduled service can make sure your system is operating at its most efficient settings. Your Maintenance Tech will also check that the parts and components are in good working order.

Tip #2: Beef up your Insulation

This is particularly true for older homes. Inadequate insulation is a factor that can lead to losing heated or cooled air from your HVAC system. If you’re unsure about your home’s insulation levels, consult with an energy auditor or insulation professional for guidance. You’ll find your life turned upside down with good insulation!

Tip #3: Use a Programmable Thermostat

Installing a programmable thermostat can go a long way. It helps in reducing your energy use when you’re not home. The less your HVAC system has to work to maintain unnecessary temperature levels when no one is home, the more savings you’ll see on your heating or cooling bill.

Tip #4: Change Your Filters Regularly

Changing your HVAC system’s air filters at least once a month, or as directed by the furnace or manufacturer, helps ensure your system has smooth, uninterrupted airflow. New filters help your system work efficiently and save you money in the process. To put it into perspective, new filters can account for energy consumption savings of 5 to 15 percent. Those are savings we can see!

Tip #5: Use Window Treatments to Control Temperatures

Window coverings can have a big effect on your home’s heating or cooling load. In the cooler months, keep the curtains, blinds, or drapes open on south-facing windows during the day to allow the sunlight to warm your home. Close them at night to add an extra layer of insulation between the glass and your home interior. In the summer, keep window coverings closed during the day to reduce the temps.

Tip #6: When in Doubt, Call an HVAC Crew

If you’re not sure what’s wrong with your HVAC system, you don’t know the root of the problem, or you want more tips and information, contact Manuel and Sons! We’re here for you 24/7, so you never have to stay up all night wondering if you made the right decision on purchasing a home.
